dM_Rice_CHPmain.jpg
New collaboration will benefit everyone from elite athletes to older adults
Rice University and Houston Methodist are joining forces to create a premier center where physicians, academic researchers and university students work side by side with student athletes, trainers and coaches to advance research and education in human performance. The Houston Methodist Rice University Center for Human Performance will facilitate joint research, clinical care initiatives and educational activities in exercise physiology, injury prevention and rehabilitation. “By partnering with Rice University, we have a unique opportunity to work together to advance our body of research and knowledge on human performance,” said Patrick McCulloch, MD, the John S. Dunn Chair of Orthopedics at Houston Methodist. “Researchers with the center will develop novel techniques to prevent, treat and recover from musculoskeletal injuries and diseases. Ultimately, these efforts will have a huge benefit for our patients at Houston Methodist. High-performance athletes, older adults and everyone in between will have access to treatment that is informed by the cutting-edge research undertaken at the center.”

A joint research collaboration between Methodist’s Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Rice Kinesiology and Rice Athletics, the center will be located in 6,000 square feet of renovated space in Rice’s Tudor Fieldhouse. It will be equipped for state-of-the-art studies requiring the latest technology for advanced 3D motion capture, force-plate measurement, region-by-region quantification of bone density, metabolic analysis, cardiovascular screening and aerobic performance testing. The Center for Human Performance will support Rice Athletics and Rice student athletes by both improving physical performance and providing on-campus clinical assessments, treatments and rehabilitation as well as educational and internship opportunities.
Digital Methodology
In a new study published in Nature Communications, Houston Methodist researchers have identified the genetic and molecular fingerprints of different cancer and immune cells in glioblastoma, the deadliest and most common type of brain cancer in adults. Their in-depth molecular analysis of over 200,000 single cells revealed a protein, S100A4, that could be a potential therapeutic target for restoring antitumor action of immune cells toward glioblastomas that have otherwise beguiled the immune system into protecting it. DEI Spotlight
Eid al-Fitr Marks End of Ramadan
Many of our Muslim colleagues recently celebrated the holy season of Ramadan. From sunup to sundown each day they fasted from food and beverages, including water. They broke their month of fasting on the last day of Ramadan, called Eid al-Fitr (meaning “break the fast”), which began with morning prayers on May 3.
Faisal Masud, MD, Mary A. and M. Samuel Daffin, Sr. Centennial Chair in Anesthesia and Critical Care; Medical Director, Center for Critical Care, Houston Methodist Hospital; and Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology, Weill Cornell Medical College, offers insight into the significance of the holiday.    “I look forward to the excitement of Eid al-Fitr, where we have big prayer gatherings, and the family gets together to exchange EIDEE (gifts). Eid celebrations are more precious this year than in past years because we could not celebrate for the last two years because of the pandemic.”
MOM ERG and CPAM Present Family Art Experience
