Ramirez joins Houston Methodist as Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology
ENews_Feature_Story_1_Ramirez.jpg
Pedro T. Ramirez, MD, will join Houston Methodist as the Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Ramirez comes to Houston Methodist from the MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he was a Professor and Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgical Research and Education in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology. He is recognized as one of the leading surgeons nationally in the field of fertility preservation in young women with early cervical cancer. Ramirez published a landmark trial that was selected as one of the 12 most influential articles in medicine in 2018 by the New England Journal of Medicine.
Houston Methodist receives gift that will expand medical education in The Woodlands
Houston Methodist received a $10 million commitment to expand academic medical education in the Woodlands. The program is expected to launch in 2024. This anonymous philanthropic commitment to fellowships is the largest gift to The Woodlands Hospital, or any of the regional hospitals within the Houston Methodist system, has ever received. This commitment will support the expansion of Houston Methodist’s academic medical program into The Woodlands campus. By creating an academic medical campus housed at a regional hospital where patients can seek specialty care typically only offered in the Texas Medical Center, we’re extending the academic culture and patient offerings in The Woodlands beyond standard clinical care. It is the first time a TMC institution will offer a sponsored academic medical program specifically at one of its community hospitals, which will include fellowships in cardiovascular disease, orthopedic surgery, pulmonary critical care and sports medicine, among others. This new program also broadens options for advancing scholarly activity with our faculty and staff who will be part of training these residents and fellows and to bring highly specialized offerings to the north side of Houston. Houston Methodist’s academic medical program includes more than 350 residents and fellows, receiving training in various specialties. While many of these physicians-in-training often rotate to one of Houston Methodist’s eight hospitals in the Greater Houston area, those that are a part of the new academic program will match and serve their full-time residency training in internal medicine, and potentially their fellowship training, in The Woodlands. Many thanks to the GME team for their hard work in planning out this program.

Mylonakis moves Houston Methodist to the front lines of the battle with infectious disease
Just prior to removing COVID-19’s global emergency status, the World Health Organization issued a call to action, a warning against complacency regarding infectious diseases. With the addition of exemplary infectious disease experts to our ranks — including Eleftherios Mylonakis, MD, PhD, the recently recruited chair of the department of medicine — Houston Methodist is moving to the front lines of emerging infectious disease research. REI grant funds research at the Center for Health and Nature
The Center for Health and Nature — a collaboration between Texas A&M Health, Houston Methodist, and Texan by Nature — has received a grant from the REI Cooperative Action Fund, which support groups that promote getting out in nature and provides seed money to encourage scientific research. The center will use the funds to create a statewide health and nature collaborative to connect researchers, practitioners, landowners and conservationists during the next two years. These funds will extend the center’s efforts to study the healing power of nature and encourage people to go outdoors.
Praying for each other
Every week, the Prayer Connect Team at Houston Methodist Hospital sends an email with prayer requests. About 160 Methodist employees have committed to pray for requests from our colleagues and community. We believe that staying connected is vital to our well-being, so please consider joining the chaplains in this initiative. If you would like to join us in praying for the requests of our employees and community, please reply to this email or contact Michela deTranaltes, Project Specialist for Grace Ministries, so we can add you to our confidential online community. If you would like to submit a prayer, either text PRAYER to 45991 or email HMHPrayerRequest@houstonmethodist.org.

NINDS R35 Research Program Award accepting applications
The NINDS R35 Research Program Award is now accepting applications through July 13. The goal of this program is to help investigators make meaningful contributions to neuroscience by providing greater funding stability, flexibility, and support for their overall research program and lab. How does the R35 support their research? The R35 RPA provides a stable budget based on an investigator’s previous 4-year average (up to $750,000 per year) direct costs, for eight years. This allows neuroscientists to: Spend less time applying for funding and more time on other professional priorities, such as mentoring junior scientists;
  • Make meaningful contributions to neuroscience;
  • Conduct research that may require more time;
  • Explore novel research questions, methods, or designs; and
  • Pivot to emerging and timely topics as they arise.
A PI is eligible to apply for the R35 if:
  • They are a Principal Investigator who has received consecutive funding in the past five years (FY19-23) from the following NINDS grants: R00, R01, RF1, R37, R56, DP1, DP2, and current R35 awardees entering their 7th year
  • They are conducting research within NINDS mission.
NINDS strongly believes that enhancing the diversity and inclusiveness of the neuroscience and biomedical research workforce will enhance our ability to advance our mission. As scientific progress is best accelerated by leveraging a broad range of experiences and perspectives, NINDS actively encourages women and individuals from diverse backgrounds, including nationally underrepresented groups, to apply. Additionally, we are committed to supporting investigators across a broad spectrum of career stages and lab sizes. Encourage the PI to submit an LOI in advance so we can recruit the best reviewers for their application. Applications are due by 4 p.m. on July 13. If you have questions about this award, please refer to the FAQs. R35 Funding Opportunity R35 Program Information and Frequently Asked Questions R35 Recipients

Employee Resource Groups Are Booming
Membership in the 10 HM employee resource groups (ERGs) is growing rapidly. Why? They’re an informal and relaxed way to meet up with colleagues who share common interests or backgrounds or want to learn more about the cultural traditions of their co-workers. The voluntary employee-created and led groups provide a safe, neutral space for employees to discuss unique issues or challenges and professional development opportunities. Members may also participate in networking events and community involvement activities. Employees across the system can join any ERG they identify with or would like to learn more about and support. You can also start a new group! To find out what all the excitement is about, text “ERG” to 45991, or contact Nazia Imrose at nimrose2@houstonmethodist.org.
